Packing for a kite trip to Cape Town is a little different from a normal beach holiday. The Atlantic is cold, the sun is fierce, and you'll want your own gear dialled in. Here's a practical checklist so nothing important gets left at home.
Kite gear
Whether you bring your own quiver or rent locally is up to you. If you're travelling with your kit, don't forget:
Kites — the most useful sizes here are a 7 & 9 m (typical for lighter riders) and an 8 & 10 m (for heavier riders), but bring everything you've got.
Your board (twin-tip or directional), fins, and a board bag for the flight.
Harness, bar and lines, and a spare pump.
Repair basics: a spare valve, bladder repair kit, and some spare lines.
Prefer to travel light? Local schools and shops rent and sell gear, and we're happy to point you to them.
What wetsuit do you need?
This one surprises a lot of first-timers: the Atlantic side of Cape Town is cold, thanks to the Benguela current. Expect water around 13 to 17°C even in summer. A 4/3mm wetsuit is the norm; some riders drop to a 3/2 on the warmest days. Boots are optional but pleasant for the walk across the sand.
Sun and skin
Cape Town's UV is intense — protect yourself for those long sessions:
High-factor, water-resistant sunscreen (reef-friendly if you can find it).
A cap or hat and proper sunglasses for the beach.
Lip balm with SPF.
Tech and practical
A universal travel adapter — South Africa uses Type M and Type N plugs, with some Type C sockets around.
A power bank; load-shedding can still knock out power (though at Khaya our solar backup keeps things running).
Your phone with WhatsApp — it's how almost everything gets organised here, from lessons to light-wind car-shares.
A dry bag for phone and keys on the beach.
Everyday clothes
Summer days are warm, but evenings on the coast can turn breezy — so pack layers. Shorts and swimwear for the day, plus a hoodie or light jacket for sundowners, and trainers if you fancy a hike on a no-wind day.
Don't forget
Travel insurance that actually covers watersports.
Any medication, plus a small personal first-aid kit.
A reusable water bottle.
