Cape Town is one of the best places in the world to learn to kitesurf: reliable summer wind, wide sandy beaches, a huge community of instructors and riders, and a relaxed vibe on and off the water. If you're a beginner wondering whether to book your first lessons here, this guide covers what to expect and how to plan the trip.

Why Bloubergstrand is a great place to learn

Bloubergstrand — usually just "Blouberg" — sits about 15 to 20 minutes north of Cape Town's city centre and is the heart of the local kite scene. Kite Beach has consistent side-shore wind from the south-easterly "Cape Doctor", plenty of space to set up, and a shallow, sandy launch that's forgiving for first-timers. On a good day you'll see everyone from first-lesson students to pros throwing big-air jumps, all sharing the same stretch of beach.

When to come as a beginner

The Cape Town wind season runs roughly from October to March. Peak summer (December to February) brings the strongest, most reliable wind — brilliant once you can ride, but sometimes too much for a first lesson. Many instructors suggest the shoulder months — October, November and March — for learning: the wind is still consistent but often a touch lighter and more manageable, and the beaches are quieter. Whenever you come, your instructor will pick the best conditions and spot for your level each day.

What lessons actually look like

Most schools teach one-on-one or two students to one instructor. A typical beginner course is spread over a few days:

  • Day 1: kite theory, safety, self-rescue, and flying a trainer kite on the beach.

  • Day 2: body-dragging in the water to control the kite and recover your board.

  • Day 3 onward: water starts and your first metres riding.

Plan for roughly 6 to 12 hours of instruction to get riding independently — everyone progresses at their own pace. Schools provide all the gear you need to learn: kite, board, harness, wetsuit and helmet.

Booking a school

Blouberg has several established, IKO-certified kite schools within walking distance of the beach. Khaya isn't a kite school ourselves, but we're happy to point guests towards the schools our community rates most highly — just ask us on WhatsApp and we'll connect you. Kite storage and a rinse station are on-site, so you've always got somewhere to keep and wash your gear between sessions.

Where to stay while you learn

Learning to kite takes several days, so where you stay makes a real difference. Khaya Kite & Yoga Guesthouse is a five-minute walk from the beach, with a pool, yoga garden, communal kitchen and a built-in community of kiters at every level — an ideal base for a learning trip. Plenty of guests book a week or two to complete a course, then stay on to practise. Long-stay discounts start from 30 nights, so it's easy to give yourself time to really get it.
